FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why do the lights flicker in my home?
That depends, it could actually be caused by a few things. Most commonly, we see it caused by a loose neutral, a bad LED driver, a fluctuation in power usage, or an amp draw. This is something an electrician can take a look at and fix for you.
  • What is a GFCI (commonly known as a GFI) outlet?
A GFCI outlet is designed to protect you from electrical shock when moisture is present. GFCIs should be installed in wet locations including places such as garages and within six feet of any sinks, kitchens, or bathrooms. A GFCI outlet has two buttons on the face of the outlet. One button reads “test” and the other reads “reset.” The “test” button will cause the GFCI outlet to trip or turn off. The “reset” button will reset or turn the power back on. If the outlet will not reset when the “reset” button has been pressed, then a problem may exist and you will need the help of an electrician.
  • Should I be worried if my outlets stop working?
Before you get too worried, check around the room and see if other outlets or lights are out. Next check the electrical panel to see if any circuits are tripped. If they are, reset the circuit breaker. If you try all of the wall switches and the circuit breaker and find that the outlet still does not work then we recommend that you call an electrician to evaluate the problem. There may be a shortage somewhere in the system.
  • Can I do my own electrical work?
Sometimes we get asked, “Can I ‘DIY’ Electrical Project”? We advise against making your own electrical repairs or a DIY electrical project. You can visit dbs.idahgo.gov for homeowners permit information and how to purchase to ensure the electrical work completed is up to code. Additionally, there is a risk of being shocked or starting a fire when working with electrical wiring. Lastly, attempting to do them yourself could cause more damage than you began with, and can become a costly repair. For your safety and your wallet, we recommend you call an expert electrician to perform any home electrical projects.
  • Why does my smoke detector keep beeping?
The most common reason is due to low batteries when there is no smoke or fire. When you replace a smoke alarm's battery, a residual charge may remain in the device. The charge can cause periodic chirping. It can be helpful in those cases to reset the alarm.
  • Does Idaho require electricians to have an electrical license?
Yes, you need an Idaho electrical license. The Idaho Division of Building Safety oversees the licensing process. Idaho electrical licenses cover two options: Journeymen Electricians and Master Electricians. A third license classification, Electrical Contractor, covers individuals who own or manage businesses that provide electrical services. Electrical contractors must either be master electricians or be employed by master electricians. At Rock Creek Electric, our owner, Charles (Clayton) Pond has a Master Electrician License, Journeyman Electrician License, and Electrical Contractors License.
